There has been some big changes around here lately! Off the top of my head the biggest one I can think of is…
1). I cut my hair!
Not just a trim either, hee hee. (You can scroll through this post if you want to see a few before pictures.) Everyone keeps asking me why I cut it and I don’t really have a good answer. I was out shopping a few days ago when I drove by a walk-in salon and just decided it was time to go short! Getting it chopped off felt like therapy, it was so soothing. I’m definitely a short hair kind of girl.
I’m really excited to mix this haircut with summer! This sounds weird but I’ve always thought girls with pixies looked extra cute on the beach. When it comes to summer and thus swimming I often feel like the only attractive way I can wear my tresses is with “long beachy waves”, “sun kissed highlights”, or in “tousled summer locks”. Every Pinterest girl in a bikini has long hair and if you look at any site or store selling swimsuits the models will always have long hair. Do I even need to mention Sports Illustrated?
To me, girls with pixie cuts always look like they get to skip all that pressure to be stereotypically sexy and just have fun. The ones I’ve seen on the beach IRL never look like they’re trying to impress anyone and I like that. :)
2). The Story Tree has been sent off to an editor!
(The Story Tree is a black and white children’s book I’ve been working on.)
Thank God for grammar nazis because I can barely tell where to put a comma. That’s embarrassing enough for any grown adult but it’s downright humiliating for me since I took both English 101 and 102. I really should know better. #sigh
I started working on the book in June of last year so it’s awesome to be so close to the finish line! I never in my life thought I’d get to be an author (even a self-made one) so I feel really really grateful to even be finishing this project.
Once the text gets back from the editors the next step is to layout the pages with the edited text. When that’s finished I’ll send the finished work to the book binding company with an order for only 1 copy. If that copy doesn’t turn out well then I’ll make adjustments and order another one. If it does turn out alright (bleed space looks good, no errors, layout works well, etc) then I’ll place a huge order and pretty much destroy the book economy by happily giving one away to everyone I know. Not to mention a birthday present supply that will last for years: “Happy birthday! I made you a book.” Who could complain about that? :D Just kidding…
Of course, I also look forward to sharing it with all of you in a free give-away! I originally planned the give away for my 24th birthday but deadlines love to fall through with these kind of things so I won’t make anymore promises about due dates. But by June would really be lovely.
3). I watched this on Netflix and it rocked my world.
Okay, so maybe rocked is a strong word but it definitely made my brain light up and go crazy. I would LOVE to design a video game. As a nerdy homeschooler growing up in the country there wasn’t a lot of other fun stuff to do so video games were a huge part of my childhood. I have the best memories of gaming with my cousins and little brother who actually gave me the heads up about this movie a few weeks ago.
The documentary follows the creation of Braid, Fez, and Super Meat Boy and the personal lives of their creators. (I’ve never played the last game but I can personally HIGHLY recommend the first two, especially Braid.) At some point in the film one of the designers called video games the “ultimate interactive art form” and I literally got chills when he said it. It’s so true! The documentary absoulutely cemented my desire to make my own work of interactive art someday.
I know that sounds incredibly ambitious especially after watching Indie Game and seeing designers and coders work for years on a single game but I’m not intimidated. My husband codes, my brother draws, and I tell stories so if it’s not possible it’s at the very least plausible. Family bonding activity! :):):)
That’s what’s been going on in my world lately, what’s new with you? Made, discovered, learned, or tried anything new lately?
