Publishing your own children's book Writing a children's book Hey, guess what? My illustrator finished the drawings for my children’s book last month!!! The pictures above are rough prototypes for the book’s back and front cover. I know I’m crazy biased but does it not look absolutely adorable? I can’t wait to have an actual copy in my hand, hopefully by the end of this month.

I’ve been researching which publishing company to use and discovered that there are tons with ridiculous prices, 20 page contracts, and fuzzy standards. It’s pretty sad. Digging through these less than scrupulous self-publishing companies has complicated my search but so far thebookpatch.com seems to have great prices and some of the most open guidelines. (They even earned an A from the BBB.) Have you heard anything about them or tried them yourself? I’d appreciate any recommendations or input.

If you read any of my previous posts about the making of The Story Tree then you know that I mentioned a give away. That’s still the plan! My 24th birthday was this month and I celebrated by giving away 24 copies of the book to my friends and family which was really, really fun. It’s your turn next! Stay tuned. :)

Mollie, I’m so excited for you!!! I’ll have to look into the Book Patch. I haven’t started researching publishers yet, but I’ll let you know if I see anything else out there.

I wish you lived in Seattle so we could have children’s book coffee dates! :)

It is adorable….but you need an editor and I would be happy to offer my services. :). “Its” is the possessive form and “It’s” is a contraction for “it is”or “it has”. All the best authors use editors. :)

I would be so grateful! Grammar and me (I?) are like oil and water. Hopefully our future children will take after your nephew instead of me. ;)
